How to Decorate a Large Empty Wall

The BIG EMPTY WALL. We all have one. The bigger the space, the more overwhelming it can be to decorate it. So we’re here to give you some ideas and get your large empty wall decorated like a pro.

Wall of mirrors

Mirrors are fantastic at bouncing light around a room and adding shine to a space. By combining several mirrors in the same style on the same wall, you can create a gallery look, with your lovely self or your lovely room reflecting back at you behind the frames. For a more modern sleek look, stick to matching oversized mirrors that have clean lines and symmetry. Or, for a more bohemian vibe, collect mirrors made from natural materials like rattan and wood.

Wall of plants

With all of our time spent in our homes these days, its no wonder that the houseplant trend of the 70’s has made a roaring comeback, bringing much needed LIFE and growth to our spaces. So why not show off your growing collection? Create a “living wall” with shelves full of plants, a mossy artpiece, or a simple framed mesh with airplants tucked in. Remember to allow for growth and select plants that fit the light requirements that the wall provides. Talk to your local nursery pro for help selecting the perfect potted pals.

Wall of art

Art is one of the best accessories to bring in personality and color to a room. Use a few coordinating large scale pieces in matching frames for a chic, contemporary look, or go nuts with a smash-up of all your favs in all shapes and sizes for a more relaxed vibe. If the eclectic curated chaos look doesn’t do it for you, find (or better yet CREATE) an oversized piece that can stand alone and fills up at least 1/3rd of the wall space.

Wall of Textiles

Often textiles get overlooked when it comes to selecting pieces to hang on a wall, so we strongly advise you to not make that mistake. Textiles like dip-dyed fringe art, macrame wall-hangings, tapestries, quilts, and even rugs, add a unique touch and can soften the hard edges of a room. Also, they can help with noise control, absorbing sound, which is a welcome idea if you’re in lockdown with your whole family 24/7.

Wall of Molding

Wall molding, planking, and slatting is roaring into every home for 2021. Although shiplap may be a trend of the past, many are still grabbing their nail guns and trimming out their spaces with decorative molding. Not only does adding some trim to your wall up the style factor of your room, but it also can visually break up a large empty space, creating interest and depth, no added decor needed. But before you head to the lumber department, take note of what style your home is and do some research on what molding pattern would look best in your space.

Wall of family photos

With our homes become even more of a sanctuary this past year, we are itching to surround ourselves with happy memories and photos of loved ones. Gallery walls of photos have long been a staple in our homes so why not embrace the tradition with an updated twist. If you’re an avid photog, why not make a “changeable” wall of photos using cables and clips. Or, keep it classy with all white frames in oversized mats, perfectly proportioned on the wall. For a more layered look that still feels chic, go gold, hanging frames in an asymmetrical format.

Wall of shelves

If you’re a collector and need more storage, utilize your large empty wall by adding shelving. Wall to wall floating shelves are easier to build than you may think, or if you need something shallow, picture ledges will do the trick for smaller frames and items. For a more modular option, try a set of leaning shelving or simple storage shelves (like those found at IKEA) painted in a bright color. Display items that coordinate, or full collections that you love.
